The Tower of Hercules, located on a hill facing the vast Atlantic Ocean in A Coruña, is the oldest Roman lighthouse in the world still in operation. Built in the 1st century AD under the Roman Empire by the architect Gaius Sevius Lupus, this imposing structure has guided sailors for almost two millennia. Although its interior preserves the remains of the original Roman masonry, its current neoclassical facade is the result of a masterful restoration carried out in the 18th century. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the tower is shrouded in legends, such as the myth that Hercules himself buried the head of the giant Geryon under its foundations. Today, climbing its steep steps rewards the visitor with spectacular panoramic views of the sea and the city, surrounded by a fascinating open-air Sculpture Park.
